You don’t have to be a vegetarian to enjoy the benefits of a plant based diet. It’s not about cutting out animal products altogether, it’s simply about resizing what’s on your plate. Instead of building meals around large helpings of meat, try starting with plant foods and add smaller quantities of meat, fish or dairy for flavour and texture.
The good news is that plant foods are more than just fruit and vegetables. While fruit and veg are a big part of plant based eating, there are plenty more delicious foods to enjoy to add variety and give us a healthy helping of all the nutrients we need. A successful plant based plan would include:
1. Whole grains for energy and fibre
2. Beans and pulses, including soya, for protein
3. Fruit and veg for important vitamins, minerals and antioxidants
4. Nuts and seeds for their good fats
