SHOP WELL - EAT WELL: OVERCOMING BARRIERS TO AFFORDABLE HEALTHY EATING

Shop Well – Eat Well is a new community initiative from Alpro in collaboration with the British Dietetic Association and the Southwark Wellbeing Hub to help make healthy affordable eating as easy as possible in the London Borough of Southwark, which has a higher than average prevalence of deprivation and childhood obesity rates.

We are all too aware of the increasing burden of obesity especially in the young and the most deprived. It is clear that despite the abundance of healthy eating messages and resources now available, we have a long way to go to overcome key barriers to healthy eating.

The scientific literature concurs that we need to make healthy eating as easy as possible for consumers. This means that environmental barriers need to be tackled seriously alongside individual barriers.

Consumers face barriers to healthy eating on a daily basis, from the environmental structure of food provision surrounding them to social, habitual, psychological and financial barriers.

For lower affluent groups, financial burden, lack of cookery skills / confidence and lack of suitable food preparation space are some of the key barriers.

The collaborative aims is to help tackle some of these barriers.
