What we use:

Your coffee cup is made of PP plastic (polypropylene) with a cardboard outer sleeve. 100% safe, 100% recyclable into planet friendly things.

Polypropylene is the second most popular plastic, strong, heat resistant and – good to know – it can be recycled into all kinds of useful things like playground equipment, for example.

More good news. The sleeve’s made from cardboard Our favourite – the more we use the less plastic we have to! And it’s 90% recycled, too. To recycle that, just peel off and add to your other card and paper waste. The lid is made from PET plastic, right now hard to recycle because it’s black. But not for long as we’re replacing it with a fully recyclable, different coloured lid. The peel off top is aluminium. Seals in freshness, good; hard to recycle, bad; one for our to do list! We’re working on that, too.

Why we use it:

Alpro plant-based baristas were created to give you the very best coffee experience. So we designed our cups to match and to seal in all that delicious coffee aroma until you’re ready to enjoy. And if you peel off the paper, you can recycle it all apart from the plastic cap and aluminium seal.

What makes us happy:

  • Right now, we need the plastic to keep everything watertight but at least adding the cardboard means we can use less of it.

  • The fact that the cup and sleeve are both fully recyclable.

  • Once we’ve found an alternative to aluminium, our cups will be 100% recyclable.

What we’re working on:

  • Black plastic is not recyclable. Yes, we know. Not good. So we’re changing that black lid to transparent PET cap just as soon as. 2020 to be precise, to make it fully recyclable (as long as your local recycling infrastructure is set up for that). When something needs doing, we don’t hang around.

  • A more sustainable, recyclable solution to that aluminium seal just as soon as someone invents it. Trust us, we’re on it.

  • Your hassle-free halo! Right now, we ask you to peel off the cardboard and recycle it separately from the cup. Not always easy when you’re out and about. But bear with us, we’re busy finding a way to make your good life simpler.
