Brand new packs but, Alpro...
...why are they plastic not glass? The answer’s clear… as glass.

Brand new packs but, Alpro...

We’ve had a major makeover! New look, new materials, some new things to try. But no glass. Surprised? Disappointed? Trust us on this one. When we looked at all the possibilities for our new drinks packaging, right now, this minute, plastic won hands down. We really did think hard about glass, but it’s heavy on materials and processing, heavy to transport and costly to recycle. But we were picky about our plastic. We’ve chosen lightweight recycled rPET wherever possible.

All PET is safe, strong, turns into any shape, turns into new bottles, too! Because it’s 100% recyclable straight into food packaging. And rPET is already recycled, so lighter on the planet.

What we use:

We’ve made a big change to the way we serve up our delicious plant-based alternative to yogurt drinks, and it’s all good. Our bottles are made from 100% recyclable rPET plastic (polyethylene terephthalate). All PET is safe, strong, turns into any shape, turns into new bottles, too! And rPET is already recycled, so lighter on the planet. rPET is the most common thermoplastic polymer used – meaning it’s easy to mould into shape when it’s hot making it perfect for bottles and other food containers and our designers love it! And we’re pleased to report that 100% of the PET in each of our bottles has already been recycled at least once. Moving on up to the cap. It’s made from HDPE (high density polyethylene). Tough enough for tops, just recyclable enough for us. Like all tiny plastic things, it can get lost in the recycling process. But – here’s the clever bit – not if you screw it back onto the bottle. That smart outer sleeve is also PET, but you’ll need to peel it off and before you recycle the bottle because it’s coloured. It’s still recyclable in some countries, but might be used to make a fleece rather than a new food pack. Only the purest white PET goes straight back into the food packaging chain.

Why we use it:

PET plastic is safe, tried and tested and perfect for keeping our drinks fresh until you pop them open. HDPE makes for a strong and lightweight cap that stand ups to being reused time after time.

What makes us happy:

  • rPET is 100% recyclable. Not only that, it’s the only material that can be recycled straight into brand new food packaging. We love the thought of our plastic going straight from bottle to bottle!

  • PET plastic is widely recyclable in many places all over the world. That’s got to increase our bottles’ chances of finding a new life!

What we’re working on:

  • Using more recycled rPET  and upping the proportion we put in our packs as soon as we can get our hands on it. We’re only limited by the amount available in the world at the moment.
