Money well spent: the East Africa Regional Forest Programme

Every penny raised is a penny put to work to support WWF in the fight against deforestation in some of the world’s most vulnerable habitats. Home to a spectacular range of plants and animals, forests play a crucial role in climate regulation and they support the livelihoods of local communities. And yet we lose a frightening 7.6 million hectares of forest cover each year to deforestation. With your help, donations from WWF special edition packs will be used to reverse the fortunes of these precious environments.

At the source of the issue

East Africa is home to some of the world’s most unique forest habitats such as the ancient Eastern Arc Mountains in Tanzania, the vast tracts of the Miombo Woodlands and multiple coastal forests across the region. A number of species that live here are found nowhere else on Earth – and yet, with illegal timber trading on the rise and large areas of forest cover being converted to cropland, these environments face the constant threat of deforestation.

Engaging local communities

The East Africa Regional Forest Programme works to involve local communities in protecting the habitat, helping safeguard the native flora and fauna while generating income for the people whose livelihoods depend on the forest. With your donation, WWF aims to increase the levels of protection by investing in local forest enterprises and promoting sustainable forest management.

The goal?

By 2020, the programme aims to increase forest cover by 15% in priority areas, as well as reduce illegal trading of timber and other forest products – vital if we are to secure the future of these precious habitats.
